90% of Info Day attendees in Iecava acknowledge that they are sufficiently informed about the implementation of the Rail Baltica project in the Bauska Municipality

This is evidenced by an express survey conducted during the Rail Baltica Information Day on April 29 at the Iecava Culture House. In response to the question, “Do you feel sufficiently informed about the implementation of the Rail Baltica project in the territory of Bauska Municipality?”, 76% of respondents stated that they are fully informed, 14% answered “Rather yes,” and 10% “Rather no.”

The Information Day was organized for the fourth time in Iecava by the Rail Baltica project implementer in Latvia—the company Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas (EDzL)—together with the general contractor of the Rail Baltica mainline, ERB Rail.

Residents were interested in which sections of the mainline within the territory of Bauska Municipality, near Iecava, will be constructed already this year, and whether the construction works will affect their usual regional mobility- both in terms of road congestion and traffic intensity, as well as in the context of the access roads to be built.

Mārtiņš Ķeņģis, Chairman of the Board of Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas (EDzL), and Gatis Gaņģītis, Senior Technical Expert at EDzL, explained that alongside construction works on the southern section of the Rail Baltica mainline in Latvia, the adaptation of the project’s technical solutions is also ongoing.

As part of this process, access solutions-such as overpasses and access roads—are being assessed. Access to properties is being addressed in a comprehensive manner by combining access roads and overpasses. The aim is to ensure logical and practically usable access so that detour distances remain reasonable.

Residents of Iecava and nearby areas were informed that in March of this year, the Bauska Municipality and the project implementer EDzL had already signed an agreement on the use and maintenance of municipal roads during the construction period, in order to ensure that works in the municipality proceed safely and in an organized manner.

The agreement, among other things, defines which roads may be used for transporting construction materials, how their condition is monitored, and EDzL’s responsibilities regarding road maintenance. The full terms of the agreement can be viewed here.

Specialists from the mainline contractor ERB Rail-Aivars Rēders and Ivars Lazdiņš-provided consultations on the planned construction of road overpasses, the progress of works, and answered questions about construction activities in specific locations where residents’ properties, including agricultural land, are situated.

Residents also attended who were interested in employment opportunities within the Rail Baltica project. The contractor explained that operators of specialized machinery could potentially be employed by ERB Rail subcontractors, such as Binders and Igate.

Active construction on the southern section of the Rail Baltica mainline is currently taking place along 30 km, across seven construction permits. Earthworks and the construction of the railway embankment are being carried out at various stages. Active development of access roads to the mainline has also begun. The number of access roads varies for each construction permit, mainly depending on the length of the specific section, which ranges from 700 meters to as much as 10 kilometers. In most cases, access roads will be located on both sides of the newly built railway, although in some areas they will be on only one side. Deforestation has been completed across the entire section, with a total of 200 hectares cleared. Unexploded ordnance scanning has been completed along an 11 km stretch, and scanning of an additional 19.2 km section is planned to begin in April. So far, 137 explosive objects have been neutralized. Groundworks for the Infrastructure Maintenance Facility near Iecava, covering 16.5 hectares, have been completed. A Construction Coordination Base near Iecava has also been established and completed. Overall, the southern section from Misa to the Lithuanian border is 45 km long and includes 11 construction permits.

Rail Baltica Information Days in Bauska Municipality are held regularly to maintain direct and open dialogue with residents affected by the construction of the new railway line. During these meetings, residents have the opportunity to ask questions directly and receive first-hand answers from project specialists.
