Residents of Bauska Region actively participate in information days on Rail Baltica mainline construction
On December 12 and 13, just before the launch of the active phase in the construction of Rail Baltica mainline near Iecava in Bauska region, information days are being organised for residents of the region at Iecava Culture House, giving them an opportunity to ask questions to the Rail Baltica project team and get acquainted with information materials on the mainline construction. The first day of the event has shown a high activity of local residents.
On Thursday, December 12, Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas, the implementer of the Rail Baltica project in Latvia, together with experts from the mainline contractor E.R.B. Rail, met residents of Bauska region at Iecava Culture House. The interest in the start of the Rail Baltica mainline construction works was high, with about 50 local residents attending the event in more than three hours. Their asked the experts many different questions.
For example, local residents wanted to know how the region’s roads would be used in the process of building the railway line and supplying materials, what would be the traffic intensity on these roads, and what materials would be used. The project experts replied that an estimate is made before the active construction phase to calculate how much and what materials would be necessary. For example, bulk materials may be supplied from local quarries, but the extent of their use is calculated so as not to affect extraction capacity, and logistics are considered and planned so that deliveries of materials should not affect either road conditions or traffic intensity.
Bauska region residents also asked whether the southern section of the route would include crossings and animal paths. The answer was that Misa–Latvian/Lithuanian border section of the mainline is to include, over a total distance of more than 40 km, two pedestrian crossings, two animal paths, as well as three railway bridges, five railway overpasses, 10 road overpasses, three combined overpasses and the Iecava infrastructure maintenance centre, which will be used as a construction base during the building works.
Another question was about the number of building permits issued so far and whether these permits can be seen in the Construction Information System. E.R.B. Rail experts explained that four building permits had been issued for the construction of the southern section of the mainline and the information on them is available in the Construction Information System. There was a great interest in the possibilities for local entrepreneurs to participate in the project. The contractor informed that entrepreneurs could apply on a special website – the supplier system https://erbrail.com/lv/piegades-kede/, by registering and becoming a partner of E.R.B. Rail
Gita Apine-Niedra, an expert of the Real Estate Expropriation and Management Department at Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas, answered individual questions and advised residents on issues such as the alienation of real estate necessary for the implementation of the Rail Baltica project and whether the railway line will affect specific properties and access roads.
Other questions included sound barriers, security and fences separating the tracks, as well as other practical and technical issues.
The information days will continue on Friday, 13 December, from 16.00 to 19.00 at Iecava Culture House. Questions can be sent in advance to: [email protected]
