Construction of Rail Baltica’s southern section is gradually gathering pace

As part of the Rail Baltica project, the construction of the embankment at the Iecava Infrastructure Maintenance Facility, located just next to the deforested Rail Baltica main line site, has started, as well as the construction of access roads and improvement works at the temporary office of the main line contractor ERB Rail.
Following the completion of the unexploded ordnance search and neutralisation works at the Iecava Infrastructure Service Facility, the preparations for the construction of the southern section of the Rail Baltica main line near Iecava are gradually gathering pace.
So far, planned deforestation works have been carried out and stump pulling works have started on the Iecava Infrastructure Maintenance Facility site. The substructure for the temporary office has been prepared, 16 office modules have been delivered and are currently being furnished.
Earthworks are increasingly covering the site area. Topsoil removal, embankment construction and the construction of substructures have started.
“It is nice to see that construction is gaining momentum. It is important for us to demonstrate to the public and the European Commission that we have moved from words to action,” Transport Minister Atis Švinka emphasized.
In parallel, road construction works are underway at the Infrastructure Maintenance Facility site, with the focus on the approximately 500-metre-long access road to the site from the national local road V9 Iecava–Baldone–Daugmale, which is needed to ensure the continuous supply of the necessary construction materials
Ditch cleaning and culvert construction works are planned to start soon to improve water drainage. Demolition of the existing buildings on the site is also due to start in the coming few weeks, while earthworks such as topsoil removal, excavation, embankment and structural layers will be continued.
During the construction of the main line, the approximately 16-hectare site of the Iecava Infrastructure Maintenance Facility will serve as a strategic logistics base and temporary office for the team of the main line contractor ERB Rail for the construction of the southern section of the Rail Baltica main line from Misa to the Lithuanian border.
